Auburn Rotary Club Project
Rotary Mobile Food Pantry
In 2002, the Auburn Rotary Club partnered with the Lee County Sunrise Rotary Club and Opelika Rotary Club in securing $3,000 in Rotary Community Action Program (CAP) funds to support the Food Bank of East Alabama's Mobile Food Pantry. Since that time, the Auburn Rotary Club has continued this tradition of community outreach through quarterly food distributions through the Food Bank's mobile food pantry.
The mobile food pantry — formerly a refrigerated beer distribution truck — helps bring the Food Bank's resources to remote areas of the organization's service area. It is one of the first of its kind in the nation, and the first of its kind in the Southeast U.S.
The Mobile Food Pantry can transport up to 7,500 pounds of food to a sponsoring church or non-profit organization, which underwrites the cost of food distributed. In the case of the Rotary Mobile Food Pantry, first Community Action Program funds, then continuing budgeted funds from the Auburn Rotary Club, eliminate the need of agencies to pay for this service and might otherwise be unable to provide food to its local residents, church congregation or agency clients.
